AU Community Celebrating the Lunar New Year 2023

“Fantastic celebration. Everyone needed that boost of happiness and joy. Confucius institute does it again.”

Terry Butler, a member of Taichi Society of Western New York wrote to Daisy Wu, director of Confucius Institute at Alfred University (CIAU). She just went home from the 2023 AU Spring Festival Dinner & Gala to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The celebration was held by CIAU in AU Knight Club, at 5pm-7pm Jan. 27th.

The gala started with Chinese dragon dance performance by AU students and faculties.

AU Guzheng Ensemble Class ensembled “Big Fish and Begonia Flowers”, Taichi Society of Western New York performed “Taichi KungFu Fan” and community children performed songs and dance. CIAU visiting assistant professor Morgan Huang performed the song “My heart will go on”.

During the celebration, the attendants enjoyed the Asian style dinner made by AU Fresh.

In his email to Daisy WU, William D Wheeler, Assistant professor of sculpture, wrote “I just want to let you know that I had an incredible time at the festival yesterday. The performance, food, and community we’re all amazing. I am so grateful to attend things like this here at Alfred.”

AU President Mark Zupan attended the celebration together with about 250 people from AU and Alfred community, Wellsville, Rochester, Corning, Cuba, etc.

The Lunar New Year, commonly known as the Spring Festival, is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar. It is the most important holiday widely celebrated in many east Asia countries. In the Chinese zodiac, 2023 is the year of the rabbit. In China, Lunar New Year is a fifteen-day celebration marked by many traditions. The Lunar New Year’s Eve reunion dinner is the highlight that kicks off the holiday.
