The Confucius Institute at Alfred University

The Confucius Institute at Alfred University (CIAU) was established in 2008 with the support of the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), Alfred University (AU) and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). The Chinese partner institution was China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). The current director is Wilfred Huang, and Chinese director of CIAU is Jijun, Yu.

CIAU aims to promote Chinese language and culture in universities and communities through Chinese and Chinese culture teaching and cultural promotion activities. It hammer at serve universities and communities, and to increase the understanding of China in the Upper New York state. It now exists Wushu Duanwei Ranking Evaluation Center (2017 new), the Hanban HSK Test Center, and Swimming Dragon Training Center. Prof. Wilfred Huang, the director of CIAU, was named "2014 Confucius Institute/Confucius Classroom Individual Performance Excellence Award" by Hanban. CIAU was named "2015 Confucius Institute of the Year" by Hanban, and volunteer Liwei Wang was named by Hanban as "2014-2015 Excellent Chinese teacher volunteer", volunteer Fang He by Hanban as "2015-2016 Excellent Chinese teacher volunteer".

AU is located in Western of New York. CIAU is affiliated directly under the Provost's Office at Alfred University. It is an educational resource for teachers, parents, and students throughout western New York.

During the period from 2012 to 2018, CIAU implemented regular Chinese and cultural activities in more than 20 school districts, which makes the radiation range of CIAU's Chinese program and cultural activities enlarged, long-term Chinese project starting from Webutuck in the east to the Chuatauqua Lake in the west, from Rochester in the north to the Windsor School District in the south.

Confucius Institute in Geneva City Central School District has been carrying out immersion teaching for 5 years. In 2016 the school district superintendent has mailed to Dr. Wilfred Huang, director of CIAU, praising the teaching effects of Chinese Immersion Program and claimed that the program has become the highlight in attracting students. Chinese Immersion Program has become a showcase in Geneva City Central School District.

CIAU is always promoting the exchange of Chinese folk musical instruments in North America. Taichi classes and Chinese painting classes in CIAU are attracting a large number of citizens to attend so that it deeper the links with community. In 2017, through the cooperation with the Chinese Wushu Association, CIAU established the second evaluation center of Wushu Duanwei Ranking in North America.

The Confucius Institute Day has become the highlights in spreading and experiencing Chinese culture in AU community together with the Moon Festival and Spring Festival. CIAU has become the cultural window of Alfred University, and Chinese culture also forms an integral part of the local culture.
