Confucius Institute at Alfred University will gladly invite teachers, researchers and media, communication, cultural studies and linguistic experts to participate in our 1st National Conference on Chinese Immersion Program(CIP) under the theme of "K-12 Chinese Immersion Program in USA: Why, What and How?" which will be held on November 3rd in Alfred University, NY.

We believe that this conference could provide a platform where participants can exchange ideas, obtain valuable experiences, and broaden their academic knowledge and networking. Presentation proposals are invited on the following sub themes, including but not limited to:

• Development & Promotion of CIP
• Scope of CIP
• Pedagogy of CIP
• Evaluation of CIP
• Technology Use in CIP

2017 Tai Chi and Health Week in Alfred
Wednesday - Friday, April 12-14, 2017
Powell Campus Center & Health and Wellness Center

To introduce the Chinese Duanwei ranking system to martial arts practitioners in the United States, with support from the Confucius Institute at Alfred University, Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing and the Chinese Wushu Association, First International Wushu Duanwei Ranking Evaluation will take place during the Chinese Tai Chi and Health Week. The clinics, evaluation and certificates are available for Chinese Wushu lovers. This opportunity is open to people of all ages and with all levels of Chinese martial arts proficiency.

A special delegation from the Chinese Wushu Association will also attend this year’s TAI CHI AND HEALTH WEEK event and provide the overseas clinics and evaluations for Duanwei ranking. Guest performers and judges include representatives from Chinese Martial Arts, Wushu College of Beijing Sport University, Beijing, China. Professor Shaojun Lu, who holds Wushu 8 Duan (Level 8), was the chief coach for the national Wushu team of Singapore, Philippine and Brazil. Professor Yanjun Li, who holds Wushu 7 Duan (Level 7), was National Wushu Champion, Chief Judge for National Wushu Tournaments, Coach for a group of National Wushu Champions.

April 3^rd: “Learning Chinese through Song” Workshop

Date: Monday, April 3^rd, 2017
Time: 7:20PM – 9:00PM
Location: Kenyon Allen Room, Powell Campus Center

This workshop will introduce the groundbreaking approach of teaching Chinese through song.  Participants will go through a step-by-step learning progression to obtain the basics of vocal techniques, including posture, breathing, voice projection, and singing expression.  They will walk away with the confidence and skills to improve their Chinese pronunciation, diction, voice projection and language expression through singing.

The guest speaker, Hong Zhang, is a faculty member of the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies and the Department of Music at Binghamton University. She holds a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance. She has given concerts, lectures, and workshops at dozens of universities nationwide and internationally.

June 2nd to July 2nd: Join 2016 Chinese Painting Exhibition!

Beginning in October 2015, Confucius Institute at Alfred University offered Chinese Painting class every Monday afternoon at the Wimodaughsian Library in Canisteo, NY. This year CIAU is honored to have local Chinese Painting artist Yan Fen Huang to teach the Class. Having learned gongbi, a “tidy”, often meticulous, realistic style in class last year, this time students learned xieyi, which is a free and liberal painting style of “sketching thoughts”. During the class, students learned to paint different kinds of flowers, birds and animals. They had a great time on class every week and painted lots of great works so far. Every year, artworks created by students will be on display on this Chinese Painting exhibition sponsored by CIAU and Steuben Trust Company.

This year, we are pleased to have Linna Roemer, Gudrun Scott, Barbara Hicks, Mary Mckinley, Karen Thompson, Betty Merring, Jim Lafaro, Janet George, Susan Digeorgio, Joanne Price, Dawn Robinson, Shannon Reynolds, Geraldine Darley, Nancy Krous, Terry Butler, Carole Onoda, Sandy Grieff, Carlyn Yanda, Jane Wu and Flare Ding in our painting class.

Feb. 6^th: Join 2016 Alfred University Chinese New Year Gala!

   • Dough Figurine, Chinese painting, Chinese song, Paper Cutting, Tai Chi, Calligraphy, Guzheng
6:00pm - 8:00pm: Dinner

Dough figurine, the art on fingertips, is a traditional Chinese folk art, which can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.). It is a tiny sculpture that uses flour and glutinous rice flour as the main raw materials. Components such as color, paraffin and honey are added and the sculpture undergoes crack control and mildew-proof processing. In the process of molding the dough, craftsmen knead, twine, rub and lift the colored dough, and then use small scissors, bamboo knives and combs among other tools to cut, carve, draw and mold the small figurines. After decorated with hair and clothes, various artistic images are created, including graceful and elegant beauties, lovely children, historical figures, living creatures and characters.

The Confucius Institute at Alfred University will sponsor its annual Chinese New Year Gala in the Knight Club in Powell Campus Center to celebrate the Chinese New Year - the year of Monkey.
Guests will get the chance to participate in a variety of cultural activities like Chinese painting, calligraphy, paper-cutting, Tai Chi, guzheng performance. Also, delicious Chinese dishes will be served.

Love Is Not Blind (失恋三十三天in Chinese) is a Chinese romantic comedy film directed by Teng Huatao which was said to be prepared specially for Nov.11—the Singles' Day in China. The film became a major commercial success in China. In the film, the main character, Huang Xiaoxian, is a 27-year-old woman who dreams of marriage. She has been in love with her boyfriend for 7 years. But she finally breaks up with him after she sees her boyfriend going shopping with her best friend intimately. Xiaoxian starts recovering from depression as the movie begins. During that period, her partner, Wang Xiaojian, helps her a lot. In the end, Xiaoxian is deeply touched by Xiaojian. She finds the one who will always keep her company within 1 metre.

Moon Festival is one of the most traditional Chinese festivals. It is a day for family reunion which takes place on the 15th day of the 8th Chinese lunar month every year. Full of joy and happiness, friends and loved ones gather to celebrate a time when the moon is at its fullest and brightest of the whole year.

This year we invite you to join us. You can not only have Chinese food, but also enjoy a traditional Chinese music concert which will be presented by Tianhan Traditional Chinese Orchestra and AU performing arts faculty.
